IP Communications: A New Era in Corporate Communications
By Brad Shimmin at 08:19 PM
In preparation for the Enterprise Networks 2004 show this month (April 26-28 in Boston), conference organizer and star IT guru Nick Lippis previews the show with an analysis of architecting IP networks entitled "IP Communications: A New Era in Corporate Communications." We hope you enjoy it. Even though the show is just around the corner, you can still register to attend.
IP Communications: A New Era in Corporate Communications
by Nick Lippis Column April 14, 2004

Over the past 3 years most network executives were tasked with finding ways to reduce network and communications cost rather than designing networks. Most corporations kept their network structure relatively constant, while making it more efficient and secure.

Thankfully, enterprise network design is back in vogue.

Blowing a New Dot.Com Bubble?
By Tom LaSusa at 09:47 AM
Several companies with ".com" at the end of their names are filing -- or have already filed -- to go public. Are happy days here again for Dot.Com IPOs? Or will the bubble go pop just like before?

Happy...ummm...Anniversary?
By Tom LaSusa at 10:45 AM

Five years. Five long years. Five long, hair pulling, fist pumping, cuss-spouting years.

What are we talking about? Well, it was about five years ago when a little e-mail first made its way around corporate and government networks. Embedded in the e-mailed attatchemt was a handy dandy MS Word macro virus that caused infected computers to send copies of the file out to 50 addresses from the users' e-mail address books.

Her name was Melissa, and her arrival was harbinger of the virus era.

Happy Anniversary Melissa -- you've been a harsh mistress.

April 15th Issue Online
By Tom LaSusa at 10:13 AM

Good Monday All,

Well, we've got some good news and bad news. Bad news is that once again, April 15th -- aka income tax day -- is about 72 hours away. We'll wait a moment while you expel a couple of colorful metaphors.

...

...

All set? The good news is that our April 15th issue is available online. Here's a peek as some of the articles you'll find inside:

  • Our Cover package on Wireless Application Platforms. Are the variety of sizes, shapes and capabilities hampering your ability to choose the right platform and mobile device for your organization's needs? Don't be overwhelmed. The answer is coming in loud and clear. Plus, we took an expanded look at four major wireless platform vendors. We can summarize the results in a word: impressive.

  • Interactive Buyer's Guide on Tape Autoloaders: We examine key features including supported formats, redundancy, as well as cabinet/chassis size to help with your product selection.

  • Sneak Preview of Netscreen's IVE 4.0: Instant Virtual Extranet 4.0 offers fine-grained SSL VPN control with centralized monitoring, reporting and configuration management.

As always, you can grab these and the rest of the contents of the new issue from our RSS feed, or you can browse for stories here.

    Have a Good Week!

    Cisco Hard-codes Insecurity
By Brad Shimmin at 12:33 PM
No one said it was easy to develop enterprise-class software. Surely while testing something as complex as a centralized wireless management infrastructure, you've got to make some shortcuts for testing purposes. But to then leave those intact in the shipping product? Oh boy.
A default username/password pair is present in all releases of the Wireless LAN Solution Engine (WLSE) and Hosting Solution Engine (HSE) software. A user who logs in using this username has complete control of the device. This username cannot be disabled. There is no workaround.

One net to free them all
By Brad Shimmin at 05:33 PM
Our own Ron Anderson just pointed us to a rather interesting find left over from the Novell BrainShare conference last month.
"Is there hope for middle turf incorporated now that the dark fud has been awakened? Will the lure of "the disc" be too much for IT manager to bear? Only The Net can free them all."
Grab your Realplayer and find out what a few quid in marketing dollars will buy a moderately conservative company looking for a little Linux street cred. It's an entertaining stream to be sure.

    Google on the Moon
By Brad Shimmin at 09:28 PM
lunar_space2.jpgWhile everyone here at the office did battle over whether or not today's Google Gmail announcement was a joke, it appears that the company with the mathematical name quietly sipped out an actual April Fools joke: Google Copernicus Center is hiring. Yes, that's right Google on the moon!
The Google Copernicus Hosting Environment and Experiment in Search Engineering (G.C.H.E.E.S.E.) is a fully integrated research, development and technology facility at which Google will be conducting experiments in entropized information filtering, high-density high-delivery hosting (HiDeHiDeHo) and de-oxygenated cubicle dwelling.
    Say Cheese!

    The Sun, She is Mine
By Brad Shimmin at 10:58 AM
Ah the rights of spring. Every year on this special day, the web just bubbles over with slighly suspect press releases, oddly crafted RFCs and exceptionally dodgy site logos. And we just love it. So far today, the "Best Goof Award" goes to seyg.com for licensing all rights to the sun.

MARKETING FIRM SECURES NAMING AND MARKETING RIGHT TO THE SUN

The Source of All Life on Earth Now Called "SEYG.com"

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

GREENWOOD, VA, APRIL 1, 2003-Leading marketing, PR and design firm SEYG Consulting today announced that it has retained the naming and marketing rights for the sun. Now called "SEYG.com" (Pronounced "Sage-dot-com"), the source of all life on Earth and (depending on your beliefs) in our solar system is now named after the marketing firm's web domain--www.seyg.com.
BTW, someone pointed out that this press release made its way around the next last year at approximately the same time. Coincidence?
